Well, crap. This one ended on a Mike Olt error. Yeah, he’s a rookie, he’s gonna do that. But you hate when it comes in a place where the game is over and you lose because of it.
G106: Feldman strong again, Rangers win 4-2
Scott Feldman had another strong outing, and has pretty much erased the ill will I was harboring towards him after his horrendous stretch earlier in the year. As bad as he was then, he seems as good now. Just look at his line from this game. 7.2IP, 6H, 1BB, 4K, 2ER, 105P. Really well pitched game by Scott. I didn’t get to watch it, but I did listen a bit, and “iPhoned” it the rest of the game. This is definitely the time for him to get hot and regain his 2009 performance again. We certainly could use it with the uncertainty in the rotation right now (Lewis out, Darvish shaky for starters). I said it in a recent update, but if Feldman rides out the year pitching like this, we most certainly could now pick up his option for 2013, something I thought would be unheard of a few months back.
G105: Rangers take first in KC, 5-3
I’ve been going to baseball games for awhile now. First one was somewhere in the early 70’s, around 73 or so, I think. The height for me was when I had a half game season ticket plan with the Phillies back in the late 80’s (for a rather awful team as I remember). It’s been a lot of games watched by this pair of eyeballs. However, I say the best one I’ve ever attended was CLEARLY the Oct 30, 2010 game I attended. That was the Rangers / Giants World Series game at home, where the Rangers won 4-2. I point that out, because there was something in this game that instantly launched me back to that World Series game. I’ll point that out when we get to it.
G104: Rangers bomb Angels, 15-9
When you give up nine runs in a game, it doesn’t quite make for what would call a “comfortable” lead. I mean, heck, the game was tied 8-8 after the sixth inning. We didn’t start to run away with it until later. This was the Texas debut of two new players, Ryan Dempster & Geovany Soto. Both recently acquired in separate deals with the Chicago Cubs. It didn’t go too well for Dempster at all. Soto did a little better, but before we get to that, we get to the curious case of Roy Oswalt.
Mike Olt purchased
- 1B/3B Mike Olt (#9) purchased from AA
- IF/OF Brandon Snyder optioned to AAA [ Link ]
NOTES: So, Mike Olt, the guy who so much talk was centered around (if not realistically) during the trade deadline is brought up to make his major league debut with the big club. Olt will be wearing #9, and he displaces Brandon Snyder, who hasn’t done a lot – a common theme for our bench this year.
G103: Rangers win wild walkoff, 11-10 over Angels
The Rangers series against the Angels certainly wouldn’t have finished the season. Heck, the Angels are technically in third place – most everyone seems to be forgetting about the A’s hanging in there. However, the Angels are still our primary rival in the division, and you never want to be swept by your rival in intra-divisional play. So, when we went down 6-0 in the top of the THIRD inning of this game, I had tuned out. Was a game I was watching on my iPhone while my the Olympics were on. Yeah, OK we scored a run in the bottom of the third, but 6-1 after three was not the kind of game I wanted to watch, so I checked out. [Read more…]
Dempster activated
- P Ryan Dempster (#46) added to active 25 man roster
- P Martin Perez optioned to AAA [ Link ]
NOTES: Dempster was added to the roster today on the day he makes his start. He took Robbie Ross’ #46, and Ross moved to 28.
G102: Rangers lose to Angels again, 6-2
The last game in the month of July started off pretty good. Scoreless tie going into the fourth. Derek Holland gives up a solo home run to Albert Pujols. OK, no big shame in that. It’s still 1-0 going into the sixth. Then Mike Trout gets a two run home run. Pujols gets another solo in the same inning. We’re down 4-0 in a game where Weaver was dealing. The “1” in his 14-1 record is us. However, we didn’t make it two. [Read more…]
Ryan Dempster acquired
- P Ryan Dempster acquired via trade from Cubs for Christian Villanueva & Kyle Hendricks [ Link ]
NOTES: This is probably a direct response to the loss of Colby Lewis for the year. Dempster is probably a rental player, so I don’t see him being a piece in 2013, but it’ll be fun while he’s here, provided he’s not awful. At a minimum I expect.. No I DEMAND a video with dueling Harry Carey impressions with Derek Holland.
Geovany Soto acquired via trade
- C Geovany Soto (#8) acquired from Cubs via trade for P Jake Brigham & PTBNL or $
- C Yorvit Torrealba designated for assignment [ Link ]
NOTES: Soto isn’t a massive upgrade over Torrealba. He’s younger, firstly. Neither of them hits with any real power – or batting average for that matter, so there’s no upgrade there. Soto is reported to be a better “catcher”. Not that Torrealba has awful, he wasn’t, but Soto’s probably a little better. When Soto first came up, he did nice for me on some fantasy baseball teams at the time, but his batting average is pretty rank lately. Hopefully the switch helps him. This is likely to me a move to help with catching in 2013, as both Napoli & Torrealba are slated to be free agents after this season.
