A couple of former Rangers are in the news the last few days.
First off is Alfonso Soriano. I seem to remember Soriano saying he didn’t want to play the outfield in New York. I know he said that when he was in Texas, but he’s now taking it to the extreme in DC. Soriano is refusing the play the outfield, a stance that put him on the bench Monday, and if he does it again Wednesday could put him on the disaqualified list. Saying “the player refused to take the field”, the Nationals believe that they will be within their rights to put Soriano on the disqualified list. The upside of that is that he wouldn’t get paid, and if that situaton ran it’s course the entire year, Soriano would not be a free agent, he’d still be Nationals property, as service time doesn’t accure if your’e disqualified. I cannot see how Soriano expects to win here, except possibly by forcing a trade. I don’t see that happening either – it’s a bit late in the game. Of course, anything can happen, but I see most clubs who could take his contract being set already. I’m really surprised he’s taking this stance, I can’t see how anything positive can come out of this. I have to say I’m glad he’s out of our hair if he’s gonna act like this.
The other player is former Ranger Juan Gonzalez, who signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox on Sunday. I look at that, and think wow – the Sox must really be hurting to sign Gonzalez. It’s been years since he’s had a full productive season, let alone two of them in a row. I can’t see where he’d be a regular starting player anymore. In the last four seasons, he’s had a total of 186 games combined. His appearances in Kansas City and Cleveland (05) were a joke, and his two years in his seocnd go around with the Rangers wasn’t that great, either. It’s not like I hate the guy, I’d love to see him have some success and put some numbers up, but I think he’ll have a hard time getting to 500 HR, which my gut tells me is the reason why he keeps going. He’s got 434 now, and he’d have to play I would think 3 years to get that, given I doubt he’ll ever be a full time 145-160 game a year player ever again. I used to rag him over the “Baggy Pants” fiasco in the Hall of Fame game several years ago, and his lack of hustle, really. I’m kind of over that – although I still think he’s more suspectible to the slider down and away than any other recent hitter I’m aware of.
It was a great sight seeing Sadaharu Oh tossed up in the air when Japan won the WBC tonight. Would the US have done that to Buck Martinez? No way. That’s why I like these other countries a bit more than the US, as they’re way more into it. The flavor of the latin teams is just something the US can’t match. It’s one reason why I really wished Chan Ho Park did well here – in his first year, entire sections at the Ballpark would be filled with Korean fans cheering him like you saw in the Venezuela & Dominican Republic games in the WBC. That’s the kind of fun that US baseball lacks. The joy that was evident in the Japanese players was great to see. Not that the US players (or any other team for that matter) wouldn’t have been happy – but the sheer joy of it is something you don’t see much in the US players – or at least I don’t.
Let the fun begin
T.O.: ‘I am a star among stars now’ <- Buahahahahahaha. Oh man. I can't wait. Oh sure, he might do good at first, but you know it's just a matter of time till he goes SF/Philly on the Cowboys. The thing I like the best about this signing is that we'll get to see him standing on the star all over again a million times. :) Buahahahahaha.
My wife won’t like this one!
This little tidbit from Jamey Newberg’s latest newsletter piqued my interest:
The Rangers are evidently talking casually to Boston about David Wells.
While I personally wouldn’t mind that, my wife can’t stand him. I find him rather amusing, and he is still servicable, if not spectacular. My guess is he’s a fallback in case Clemens goes somewhere else. As long as we’re talking about Boomer, his book is pretty darned amusing. If you’ve never read it, you should. Here’s what I wrote about his book on my blog awhile back.
I never liked David Wells, mostly because I only knew him as a Yankee player. That alone is generally enough to get me not to like someone. :) I wanted to check this out solely because of the “hype” surrounding the book. And after having read the book, I have to wonder if the negative press surrounding the book and some of it’s “expositions” weren’t self inflicted. Read the book. It’s a wonderfully entertaining read. He talks about all the problems he had in his life early on, from his time in the minors, to the boredom in the bullpen (although his story about getting women in the stands to flash them is awesome) to his battles with team management, and lots on the Yankees. I also got a charge out of his comments on former Reds owner Marge Schott, and her dog.
I have to admit that this book goes on my recommend list. It was a funny read, and for a baseball fan like myself, gives me some insight into the mind of a baseball player. I really enjoyed it. The link here is for the hardback edition of the book. There is a paperback version scheduled for release, but it’s not currently slated until Mar 1, 2004. The hardback is available now.
Oh, BTW, if you’re someone who isn’t into the liberal use of foul language, you might want to stay away from the book. It’s not like every third word is f this or f that, but there is definitely more than a smattering of f-bombs and the like in the book.
I wrote that back in 2003 when I first read the book. Since then, the paperback version has come out, and is linked above. The hardback version has no discount on Amazon right now, but there are some used copies available through the picture link for as cheap as twenty cents. The paperback link has a facility where you can read a few pages inside the book online. I recommend this book, it was a good read.
Fantasy Baseball
Just wanted to say thanks to those of you who signed on to my annual free fantasy baseball league over at Yahoo Fantasy Baseball. We had our draft tonight, and I think about half the league showed up (I didn’t count, really). Draft went well, had some good chatting – and one of the guys actually paid to be on the draft from a hotel in Hawaii or something like that. That was pretty cool! To those who didn’t or couldn’t make it (one guy joined the Army, so he’s got a good excuse), I hope your drafted teams serve you well, too.
Games have started
Well, the games have started. They’re officially intrasquad games, so there’s not much to report, and even less information to find about them online. The real games start tomorrow. The first one is not on the radio unfortunately, so we’re back to a few weeks of just relying on box scores to “listen” to games. :)
But games are back. Eric & Victor return Friday. All is good!

After seeing this comment over on Lone Star Ball, I had to go do it. :)
Spring Training Radio Schedule & Fantasy Update
When I was setting up the schedule earlier today, I was surprised to find out that nobody had the spring training radio broacdast schedule online. The Rangers site didn’t have it, and even more surprisingly, KRLD itself (either on the station or it’s texasbaseballradio site) had it. I was really surprised by that. So I wrote Victor Rojas and asked him. Vic was really cool and wrote ME when he first got the job, as he said he looked up Ranger fan sites and wrote people and said Hi, so I decided to ask him. HE wrote me back this evening with the schedule as he knew it, and it’s now online here. A thanks to Victor Rojas for filling me in on that.
Also, earlier this week I had noticed that the 2006 TV schedule was on the Rangers site. I had done the April page from that information, but only did the one page. I went today to make up the rest of the TV schedule, and it’s been taken back down. Not sure why, as it was there earlier this week, but it’s not there now – so I only have the TV broadcast info from April 2006 due to that.
And finally, my fantasy league is filled up. All 12 slots have been taken. I’ll create another one if there’s enough interest from folks in joining up. If you are still interested, either send me an email, or leave a comment to this message – I’ll do another one if there’s enough folks who want it.
UPDATE @ 11:45PM: Turns out the DMN article I read this morning did have the KRLD schedule, I missed it completely when I read the paper, I guess because I glossed over the schedule, which I had seen before. However, the DMN article did also show which games are on TV in spring training. There are three of them. Surpisingly the one in Arlington is not one of them. Check the schedule for this information.
A few site updates today
Sunday morning brought the spring training preview in the Dallas Morning News’ sports section. After reading that over a nice omlette at breakfast, I then took to working on my site.
In the paper was the spring training roster. I went through the Uniform Number History section of my site and brought each number up to speed with the spring training assignments for 2006. The Rangers site also listed the non roster invites (which the DMN did not), so I’ve got everyone, except for the odd extra coaches who I usually have to find out right when spring training starts, as they’re generally not listed anywhere ahead of time. Also, some of the season staff (Bobby Jones for one) don’t have assigned uniform numbers on the Rangers site yet, and things like the bullpen catcher aren’t listed, either.
I also went through and did my 2006 Schedule pages. I normally would have them done by now, as the 2006 schedule has been known for awhile. However, I’ve been trying to think of a new way to do the schedules for 2006 that more involves my blogging software here, but I’ve been unable to come up with a really good automatic way, so I’ll probably just end up doing it the same way unless I can think of something (that works) between now and when games actually start in March.
Speaking of the schedule pages, I also have decided that I’m not going to go backwards (meaning from the 1999 through 2005 season archives I have here) and update the pages with the new menu look. There’s an absolutely incredible number of pages there – roughly 200 per season over the 7 seasons in the archives). I’m not planning on spending THAT much time on the site. Manually updating roughly 1,400 pages is a lot of work considering they rarely get looked at (even by me).
Also, don’t forget about my Yahoo fantasy league if you’re a regular site visitor. There’s details about it here. Thanks for visiting!
Texas Rangers TV Commercials
When I was constructing the pages for the new site layout, I hit upon my downloads page. It’s rather out of date, and hasn’t been seriously updated in years. However…
I did realize that I had several TV commercials there from 1998 & 1999 as mpg files. THrough the magic of Google, their new Google Video service allows you to send them video files, and they’ll host them for you. They also allow you to stream them to your own site and you don’t have to cover any of the bandwith.
That’s what the Ben Grieve commercial I posted the other day was. This story contains streaming versions of all of these TV ads that I sent to Google. The Google Video player requires you to have the flash plugin active (which just about every modern browser does now). You could in theory play them all simulteanously, but I wouldn’t advise that. :)
I really wish I had the old Molly ads on tape, but I don’t – the Rusty Greer “I am Pillow Man” one was great, as was the one where Molly was playing videogames on the Jumbotron with someone (McLemore maybe?).
If you liked any of these, please use the comments field and leave a comment on them. Thanks.
One more about the new layout
