Rangers acquire two pitchers
The Rangers acquired two pitchers today. Neither of which will probably make a major impact.
1) James Baldwin claimed on waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.
2) Kevin Grybowski acquired via trade from the Atlanta Braves for Matt Lorenzo.
James Baldwin used to be someone who scared me years ago when he was with the White Sox. I hated facing him, as the Rangers never seemed to be able to get him out. However, looking at his stats over the last few years, I can see why he’s bounced around and was placed on waivers. Not sure what they see in him, unless it’s just an arm to have. His 2005 numbers seem to be a little better than his usual career numbers, but I don’t see a lot of upside to this. I see this move as Pedro Astacio II.
Kevin Grybowski on the other hand appears like he could make a difference in our bullpen, which has been ravaged lately. In 2005, he’s appeared in 31 games, has an ERA of 2.95, given up 24 hits, 12 walks, 8 strikeouts, and 7 earned runs. I’m not sure whether he’s a flyball or a sinkerball pitcher or what, but if those numbers translate here, then he’ll probably do well.
Will have to see what other moves have been made to accomodate this on the major league level. As I write this, there’s no mention of it on the Rangers site, there probably will be some more news closer to the start of tonight’s game.
Update: There a news story on the Rangers site about it now (link). However, they haven’t been added to the 25 man roster yet; the press release saying they’ll be added sometime during the series with Oakland. Probably after Kenny’s hearing tomorrow depending on what happens with a further appeal.
G93: Yankees Homer Rangers to death 8-4
Jack Benoit started off this game in unbelievably spectacular fashion. He struck out the first four batters of the game. It was electric to watch! He then went and gave up back to back home runs to Jason Giambi & Jorge Posada. But even after that, I felt good. Benoit was pretty decent tonight. Through the first four. Then came the fifth, and when rookie Robinson Cano hit a three run home run, I felt like that was it. The ship had sailed. And sail it did. It also left behind three more home runs, for a total of 6 by the Yankees.
That’s pretty much the story of this game. Home runs all over the place.
It was a depressing thought, the end of this game. Because it felt like we weren’t in it, even given the decent pitching we got the first few innings. I thought we’d beat up on a journeyman pitcher for the Yankees, and we didn’t. Starting to feel bad about the overall direction of the team this season. I never believe it’s OVER until there’s more concrete proof of it. There are still two months left, and we could pull a rabbit out of our hat. But with Kenny being out for awhile, coupled with the state of what’s left behind him, I can’t say I have a lot of confidence.

G92: Rangers squeak by Yanks 2-1 behind Park, Blalock
I don’t have much time to write about this. But to be honest, what needs to be said beyond this?
Chan Ho Park was dominating. Mike Mussina was great. Hank Blalock delivered a winning blow in the 8th, and CoCo had a “2005 Save”.
Nice to knock the Yankees out of first place after we let ’em get there the night before. :)

Yankees Whining Again
Saw today on the New York Post where Joe Torre is planning on complaining to MLB about John Wetteland. Technically he’s not supposed to be in uniform and in the dugout during the game, there’s a rule that you’re only supposed to have six coaches. Our six in uniform coaches are Rudy Jaramillo, Orel Hershisher, Don Wakamatsu, DeMarlo Hale, Steve Smith, & Mark Connor. Wetteland makes 7 which pushes us over the limit. However, it’s been I think two years
And what about guys like Don Kalkstein? He wears 66, and is essentially the “shrink” for the team. I know that’s not his real title, but I can’t think of what his real one is. I see him in the duguout all the time. What’s the difference between Wetteland and Kalkstein? Why complain about it now? What about all the other teams who didn’t care, or all the other times we’ve played the Yankees?
What exactly does Torre hope to gain by this? Seems like a cheap shot to me, even if we are violating the coach rule.
In other Yankee news, the same article talks about the Yankees wanting to get Gary Matthews Jr from the Rangers. I will say my usual quote. Never help the Yankees. Baseball would be better off if not a single team at all ever traded with the Yankees. DON’T HELP THEM. Period.
Various Ranger Thoughts
1) Well, that didn’t take long. Jason Botts was sent back down today without having made an apperance as far as I can tell. CJ Wilson is brought back up. Given the state the bullpen is in now, we probably need another arm. Is Wilson it? Don’t know. At least Botts won’t get a chance to rot on the bench. When he comes back, I’d rather it not be as a bench player.
2) The quote by an unnamed player that appears in today’s FTW-ST article by Jim Reeves is pretty damning of Ranger management. The quote was “I’m not expecting anything, why would I?” in reponse to a move at the trading deadline. Now I don’t know who that is, but I have a hard time it’s someone like Marshall McDougall, or Sandy Alomar. It’s probably someone like Soriano, Blalock, or Tex. Why? Fringe players aren’t likely to make a quote like that – to me, that kind of statement is made by a player who is a leader, or at least is established. Could be Kenny, given his recent spate of negative happenings. Who knows? The point is if it’s true, then it means that players are getting agitated about the lack of moves. For the most part, I agree with Jim Reeves, although I think he takes it a bit too far. I agree something needs to be done, but I don’t think it’s quite as dire as Reeves makes it out to be.
3) Francisco Cordero should change his uniform number to 35. He appears to have become John Wetteland in terms of the scariness of some of his appearances. I love Wetteland, but he had a habit of putting men on before getting the job done. That’s what Cordero is doing (or worse, giving away the lead).
4) Juan Gonzalez is out for the season. [ link ]. I can’t say this surprises me. A quick look at some of his stats the last few years:
Games | At Bats | HR/RBI | Salary | Team | |
2005 | 1 | 1 | 0/0 | $600k | Indians |
2004 | 33 | 127 | 5/17 | $4Mil | Royals |
2003 | 82 | 327 | 24/70 | $13Mil | Rangers |
2002 | 70 | 277 | 8/35 | $11Mil | Rangers |
2001 | 140 | 532 | 35/140 | $10Mil | Indians |
I have to say, it’s a better rate of money per at bat than any other player in history, even counting Arod. Juan made 600k for one plate appearance this season. I can’t imagine anyone giving him a major league deal next year, assuming he even tries. Someone’s got to sign him to a minor league deal.

G91: Rangers lose slugfest to Yankees, 11-10
I was at this game. Going there I thought it was going to be bad. Yankee games are always bad because of the jackass contingent of Yankee fans that always turn up. To that, I did get some amusement out of saying “Non All Star Derek Jeter” (thanks for that Tom!). But the weather ended up not being bad at all, in fact there was a nice breeze going, which was a surprise for mid July. I even wasn’t irritated by the Yankee fans cheering for their people – but I did get a chuckle out of the extra emphasis that Chuck Morgan put on the announcement of “don’t be an idiot in the stands” (my words). That announcement only seems to be used when Yankee fans are in the house.
The game itself was surprisingly good, even if there wasn’t a lot of (good) pitching on either side. Let’s face it, with a game that had a total of 338 pitches and 11 pitchers, you know it’s not going to be great statswise. But it was one of those games that went back and forth and back and forth. I don’t know exactly how many times the lead changed hands, but it was a couple.
I tend to like games that go back and forth like that. I detest games when we get behind 7-0 right away. Even if we come back from a deficit like that, I’d much rather the game be close all the way, even if we lose.
This was game two where Jason Botts rotts on the bench. I wish we had a formal position for him to come up to.

Something odd about the Phillies site
The other day I was looking at the Phillies website. I’m from there, so I continue to follow the team. Something was bugging me about the their site, and I couldn’t figure it out. I finally did. Look at this capture from their site. Do you see what’s wrong with it?
I didn’t pick up on it right away, but perhaps you will. Take a look. If you can’t figure it out, highlight the text below with your browser.
The baseball that is leaving the stadium in the picture is leaving in foul territory! That image is used to signify a home run ball flying out of the park. But this is a foul ball – behind the plate, and a little up the first base line!!!
I don’t know who was the bonehead that approved that picture, but I bet you they didn’t know much about the park that this image is supposed to be about!
Yeesh.
Nix to DL, Jason Botts called up
I see Laynce Nix has been put on the DL again. If he had been an 8 year veteran, I’d call him Rusty Greer. He dives all over the place, but is getting hurt a lot. Difference between Nix and Greer seems to be Nix has more power.
As for Botts, he’s definitely someone that deserves to be up here, although I would have though it would have done away with Hidalgo when he got here. Anyway, hopefully Botts doesn’t rot on the bench, which is something I think is a legit concern. Coming to the majors is a big step, and some guys can get sapped when they’re bought up as big prospects, and spend most of their time on the bench.
