Game Recap
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Miguel Asencio worked five strong innings to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Saturday.
Asencio allowed one run and two hits. He struck out three and walked two.
The 25-year-old has been out with multiple surgeries to his right elbow, keeping him sidelined since his last major league appearance in May 2003 with the Royals. If Asencio’s elbow holds up, he could be one of the first starters called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs if a Rockies starter goes down.
“This is the longest outing I’ve had in three years,” Asencio said, “but the strikes felt even better near the end. I don’t know where I’ll start the season. I just know I have to finish every start strong.”
Garrett Atkins hit a solo home run off Rangers starter Vicente Padilla in the second inning. Todd Helton went 3-for-3 and Cory Sullivan and Brad Hawpe drove in runs for the Rockies.
John Mayberry Jr. doubled in a run and Erubiel Durazo had two hits for Texas.
Padilla allowed eight hits and three earned runs in 5 2-3 innings. He walked two and struck out two.
Notes
Rangers RHP Adam Eaton pitched 1 1-3 innings in a minor league game Saturday and will make his final spring start Wednesday against San Diego, his former team. Eaton, who allowed a double, faced four batters and threw 14 pitches, eight for strikes. He is scheduled to start the second game of the season April 4 against Boston. … Rangers OF Jason Botts was sent to Triple-A Oklahoma. He hit .243 with a home run and five RBIs in 17 spring games. … Rangers LHP Kevin Walker was sent to minor league camp. He went 1-1 with a 3.24 ERA in seven spring relief appearances.
