Game Recap
SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Chone Figgins hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs Tuesday as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Texas Rangers 9-0 in a matchup of possible opening day lineups.
Tim Salmon hit his first home run of the spring and went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Jose Molina also connected, his first of the spring.
Figgins, who went 4-for-4, put the Angels ahead 6-0 with his fourth-inning shot off reliever Jon Leicester. He scored the first run after opening the game with an infield single.
“I’d definitely take this every day,” Figgins said. “Seriously, I’ve just been working on making all my at-bats count this spring. Hopefully, I’ll take that into the regular season.”
Figgins, who leads the Angels with three homers this spring, couldn’t resist rubbing it in when Vladimir Guerrero walked by after the game.
“Three baby, three,” he said with three fingers raised. Guerrero just shook his head and kept walking.
“He’ll pass me his first hot day,” said the diminutive leadoff hitter.
Angels starter Jeff Weaver, who came into the game with a 15.43 ERA in three starts, allowed three hits in five innings while striking out five.
Michael Young, Mark Teixeira and Hank Blalock of the Rangers, playing together for the first time since the World Baseball Classic, were a combined 1-for-9.
“I was able to throw more breaking balls today, which set up my sinker,” said Weaver, slotted as the No. 5 starter. “This is something positive to build on. This is a team we will face quite a few times this season. I wanted to put something into their minds.”
Rangers starter John Wasdin gave up five runs and eight hits in 3 1-3 innings. A long shot for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, Wasdin couldn’t improve on his 11.37 ERA.
“He got some good counts, but just couldn’t finish,” Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. “This isn’t where he’s going to be.”
Juan Rivera, who opened the scoring by driving in Figgins with a first-inning single, went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Notes
X-rays of Angels C Jeff Mathis’ left hand were negative. He is day to day after being hit by a pitch Monday. … Texas starter Adam Eaton said his pitching arm is feeling better since it was hit by a line drive Sunday, but the right-hander is still questionable for his next scheduled start Friday. Eaton worked out Tuesday, but skipped his regular bullpen session because of the deep bruise below his right elbow. “I threw it about 60 feet today, but that was it,” Eaton said. “It felt better than it did Sunday. I can tell you that. We’ll see what happens.” … Rangers LHP C.J. Wilson has stiffness in his shoulder and was kept out of a minor league game on a back field. “We’ll see tomorrow,” Showalter said. “But I do have some concern.” Wilson had been slowed earlier in camp by a hamstring injury. … RHP Kameron Loe pitched 5 2-3 innings and gave up two earned runs on five hits in a game against Seattle minor leaguers. He threw 66 pitches (55 strikes). Closer Francisco Cordero struck out the side in his inning. … OF Gary Matthews took live batting practice for the first time in two weeks and felt a twinge in the strained rib cage that has limited him this spring.
